This Sacred Heart of Jesus statue was donated by Mr. & Mrs. George Moser and sits above the right side altar. The side altar was donated by Mr. & Mrs. J. Hahn. Originally this side altar was the Shrine of St. Joseph. St. Joseph now stands along side of the Blessed Virgin Mary on the left side altar.
The shrine of the Sacred Heart is separated from the nave of the church by plaster arches. Made of marble with a tabernacle inset. The Statue of the Sacred Heart was carved from wood at Oberammergua and decorated in the studios of the Rambusch Decorating Company to conform with the original decorative scheme reminiscent of the early church. The marble rail was reconstructed from the original communion rail during the 1968 renovation.
The Sacred Heart of Jesus is shown holding within the bosom of Christ with his wounded hands pointing at the heart. The wounds and crown of thorns allude to the manner of Jesus’ death, while the fire represent the transformative power of divine love and mercy. He is saying to us, “Look at My Heart and see what I am feeling”
The thorns around His heart are a representation of how our sins pierces His heart. The flames and and the cross serve as a reminder of the suffering He endured for our salvation and of His burning love and mercy for us. The dripping blood represents the blood Jesus shed for our salvation!! The Feast of the Sacred Heart of Jesus is celebrated on June 27th.
